Ijen Miners

Ijen Volcano, located in eastern Java, Indonesia, is characterized by its crater containing a sulfuric lake and abundant sulfur deposits. Here, miners work daily in hazardous conditions, extracting sulfur from the volcano's crater.

They brave the dangers by climbing the active volcano, navigating through sulfur gas, and hauling sulfur in baskets out of the crater. Despite the harsh working conditions and meager pay – typically earning around £3 for carrying up to 90 kilograms of sulfur per day – they persevere to sustain their livelihoods.

For them, work is not just a means of survival but a courageous challenge in life. Despite facing life-threatening situations daily, they continue to press forward, striving for themselves and their families. The stories of these brave miners are not only admirable but also serve as a reminder to cherish life and to remember that in some parts of the world, people are still struggling in harsh conditions.
